 | 29-09-2006 - Tiger Wins World Masters Cycling Championships Manchester 2006 By Dave Le Grys. Cycling Coach.
The World Masters is not the same as the Elite World Championships as they are for riders aged 30+ and are in 5 year age groups. In theory you would think when you get to 30 odd you start slowing down, try telling that to some of the 50-60 year olds who are still nearly riding at World Elite level.
My age group, 50-54 was particularly tough this year as Gordon Singleton (Canada) and Gil Hatton (USA) are past World Elite Champions and arch rivals to me over the years. The Australian and South African riders are worth a mention as they always come up with a World Class rider. With over 21 Countries competing, it was full on training for me, while I worked via my laptop and internet to stay in touch with my clients. I moved up to Manchester during the last 4 weeks building up to the Worlds making sure I got onto the indoor wooden 250 metre Velodrome regular.
The events I trained for were 500mts TT and Team Sprint.
500m TT is basically 2 laps of the track, matched against another rider opposite the track and the fastest rider wins. There was over 60 riders in my age group all gunning for me as I was the reigning World Champion over this distance. The event requires, an explosive start and full on power the moment you leave the start. It takes between 34-40 seconds depending how fast you are but leaves you completely empty when you cross the line, it’s a bloody long way to sprint.
I have been racing bikes for over 39 years, competed at Olympic and Commonwealth Games, World Championships, Grand Prix’s all over the World. You would think that at my age, this would be a bit of fun and not worth getting too anxious about. Let me tell you, it was as nerve wrecking as riding the Olympic Games 30 years ago.
I was last in my age group matched against a former British Champion Steve Cronshaw, I had the advantage of watching the Americans set the fastest time 35.300 and 35.302, it was close, then Gordon Singleton returned a time of 35.896 which surprised me but I had to keep focussed, I knew that to win I would have to get close to the World Record which is 34.845. I needed to do a ride of my life, talk about adrenalin rush, I had to keep my bottle and hope the gear selection I chose for the event and training had all come together other wise I would be out of the medals.
My ride was pretty much a blur, but it was routine for me, I have drilled myself to do this over and over again, working on my starts, power, top end speed etc. it has not been easy especially fitting this in with my work and living out of my suit case.
The result when I crossed the line was 34.860, 15 thousands of a second off the World Record!
I won Gold and managed to beat Singleton and Hatton who were my greatest threat and ended up out of the medals, it just goes to show you, sometimes you can worry about the wrong outcome.
I went on to win the Team Sprint which consists of a team of 3 riders that go hell for leather over 3 laps of the Velodrome, each rider completing 1 lap then swings off out the way to let the other rider take over. We beat USA and South Africa in the Finals.
I want to thank Tiger Communications for their support to make it possible for me to move up to Manchester for my preparations, next year the World Championships are in Sydney Australia, I suppose I will have to start thinking about training for them soon.
A special thank you to, Brian Hoadley whom I coach for his cycling, for his interest in my cycling achievements. | |
