Equitas, based in London, was established in September 1996 to reinsure and run-off the 1992 and prior years' non-life liabilities of Names, or Underwriters, at Lloyd's of London.
The Company was transformed when it entered into an agreement in November 2006 under which National Indemnity Company, a member of the Berkshire Hathaway group of companies, reinsured its liabilities and another member of the Berkshire Hathaway group, Resolute Management Services Limited ("RMSL"), took over responsibility for the run-off. This first phase of this transaction was completed in March 2007.
The second phase of the transaction was completed when the High Court made an order on 25 June 2009 approving the transfer under Part VII of the Financial Services & Markets Act 2000 of the 1992 and prior non-life business of members and former members of Lloyd's to Equitas Insurance Limited. The transfer covers all the business reinsured by Equitas at the time of Reconstruction and Renewal in 1996, and includes the PCW syndicates' business reinsured by Lioncover Insurance Company Limited and the Warrilow syndicates' business reinsured by Centrewrite Limited. The transfer took effect on 30 June 2009, and means that Names are no longer liable for their 1992 and prior years' underwriting liabilities at Lloyd's as a matter of UK law.
FBD has 40 years insurance experience and has grown into one of the country's largest insurers with over 500,000 loyal and satisfied customers.
We’ve been underwriting insurance since 1901. Of course times have changed since then, but we like to think that the reason we're still around is because we've changed with them.
People are at the heart of what we do, and always have been. Over the years, we've learnt a lot about what's important to our clients, and that inspires the type of insurance we provide and the way we handle claims. Honour and integrity are values that matter to us. We always try and do the right thing.
Today Lloyd's is the world's leading insurance market, housed in an award-winning modern building in Lime Street in the City of London. Its origins, however, lay in the more modest surroundings of a 17th century coffee house.
In the 17th Century London's importance as a trade centre led to an increasing demand for ship and cargo insurance.
Lloyd's coffee house became recognised as the place for obtaining marine insurance. From its first beginnings in Edward Lloyd’s Coffee House in 1688, Lloyd’s has been a pioneer in insurance. Starting with its roots in marine insurance, Lloyd’s has grown over 300 years to become the world’s leading market for specialist insurance.
From 17th century shipping and Lord Nelson’s victory at the Battle of Trafalgar, through the devastation of the San Francisco earthquake in 1906, and on to the emergence of space satellite technology in the late 20th century, the story of Lloyd’s is both a long and an interesting one.
